Hi Joyce

I was on methotrexate for about 10 years (about to restart) with a couple of breaks but didn't experience weight gain! I wasn't aware that Mtx was known for causing weight gain, my patient leaflet mentions loss of appetite and possible weight loss as a side effect!

Have you had the weight gain problem since you started taking Mtx or more recently? Wondering whether it could be due to oedema, fluid in the tissues, caused by poor liver/kidney function which can occur on Mtx? This should however be reflected in your blood results. Just a thought as not come across this before.

Perhaps someone else will have experienced this Smile

Hello Joyce

I have been on Methotrexate for two years but I do not think my weight has increased because of this.

I was talking to my GP last week. A year before I was diagnosed with RA in 2009 I managed to lose nearly three stone in weight. This was a combination of a healthy diet and jumping up and down like a lunatic to keep fit DVD's. Since my diagnosis and my health declining there is no way I can now do this sort of exercise. I do a desk based job and then at weekends I sit around gaining the strength to attend work again for the next week. My GP said that unfortunately it is very difficult to lose weight by diet only. He said that if I was really good and stuck to it religiously I should shift maybe a pound a week. When you add this up over a year I suppose this would be significant.

Hi Joyce

I lost just over a stone in weight with Slimming World a few years back. However, while initially it dropped with change of diet, after a while I found that I had to exercise to continue the drop. Dietary changes alone won't sustain weight loss, even with Slimming World or Weight Watchers. Sadly a combination of things meant the weight went back on and since having been diagnosed with RA last November, I've put on another stone in weight. I've been on MTX almost as long but it's most like the prednisalone that's caused the problem with lack of exercise. I can't seem to get off the Pred and while the weight increase has only gone up a little in recent months, I still can't lose any ... I'd like to try and go swimming but don't fancy the council swimming pools much and can't justify paying out for a private gym membership 'cos of the fact you have to sign up for so many months' commitments. As I'm only on 3 monthly contracts, with a chance I could be out of work again at the end of this month, it's a bit of a concern.

It's worth trying something like Swimming World and those weekly weigh-ins do definately concentrate the mind to make sure you do try and stick to it.

Hi Nicola
Thanks for the advice, I think the same as you its the lack of exercise that's making the weight stick around, as you say it take all your effort to just keep going some days let alone leaping about Sad

Have recently enrolled on Slimming World on line as difficult to get out some days so hope this will keep the motivation going
